Been listening to the album on the way home from Xmas celebrations, and was thinking of what the opposite of strident would be…
The album isn’t sombre, nor melancholy, so maybe it’s tranquil! No let’s make that sparse.
Many thoughtful and rather lonesome breaks, especially the very breathy trumpet from Mr Pohjola. All give a lot of space – for reflection?
So yes, it’s a good album, methinks. 3 covers, 3 tunes from Pohjola, two from pianist Prättälä, and one from drummer Louhivuori. Not easy listening, but spacious, melodic, and in these days of grand overproduction, absolutely devoid of electical gimmickery. Which isn’t to say it’s gimmickless, but it is an essentially unexpurgated oevre. Nice!
